Del Caro's Hornpipe is included in Leslie Thornton's self-instructor for the banjo (London 1874) the title page of which can be seen above. This hornpipe is traditional and became associated with the Italian dancer Madame Del Caro who lived in London and danced professionally on theatre stages throughout the Regency period. This tune was popularly reported to be her favourite hornpipe. Thornton published the tune in the key of G; for the recording it was transposed to the key of E for a 6-string banjo tuned eABEG#B.
